Dry Transfers FAQs

We’ve put together some Frequently Asked Questions about our dry transfers service.

What is the difference between a foil finish and a metallic finish transfer?
A foil finish, we would say, is more reflective. A metallic finish can be either matt or gloss but has flecks of metal like metallic car paint.
You can see the foil finish in our YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PnzNLcno0c&ab_channel=BELSigns

What is the difference between the finishes?
We offer three types of finishes: Satin (Matt), Gloss, and Foil. Our blog provides examples and explains which finish might suit your project.

What is the smallest size of dry transfers?
With regards to line width, we would say 0.7pt. Text size depends on the font as a serif font has smaller decorative details. Ideally, if the text needs to be small use a sans serif font, the smallest we would advise is 4pt, no smaller.

Can I order white dry transfers?
Yes. Simply set the artwork up in magenta and specify the colour on the order.

Can I order clear dry transfers?
Yes. It is like a spot varnish. Simply set the artwork up in magenta and specify on your order.

How do I store my dry transfers?
If, for any reason, you need to keep your dry transfers, store them flat with their backing sheet in a dry place. They are UV stable, so they don’t have to be out of light.

Can I order Letraset® sheets?
Dry transfers were most popular as Letraset® sheets. However, they are no longer manufactured and Letraset® sheets are hard to get hold of. Our dry transfers are bespoke, so rather than providing a whole sheet of lettering, lines, arrows, dingbats or icons, we can supply exactly what you need in the size you require. If you don’t have access to design software, use our in-house design services to create dry transfers for your purpose. Get in touch with us to discuss. Can I place dry transfers onto fabric material?
No. Fabric is generally too rough for a dry transfer. Dry Transfers need a flat smooth surface to adhere to. If you need a transfer applied to fabric talk to our sister company AppliedFX about DTG (Direct-To-Garment) or Heat Applied Transfers onto garments.

Can I apply dry transfers onto…
This is a common question and there is a long list of types of surfaces you can apply dry transfers to. We would say dry transfers are best applied onto smooth surfaces. You can apply them onto curved surfaces, but flat is easier. If the surface is rough the transfer will not be able to adhere.

Can I lacquer a dry transfer?
Yes. Dry transfers prefer a water-based lacquer, but we would suggest a test first. Dry Transfers have been known to shrink or wrinkle under a lacquer, so testing first is a must.

Can I use my negative again?
Yes. If you wish to have a repeat dry transfer order, just let us know when placing your order that it is a repeat and you will not be charged for a new negative. We store your negatives for up to a year, as they do deteriorate and will need to be replaced at after that amount of time. However, if you wish us to store them for longer, please let us know.

What is a burnisher and do I need one?
A burnisher is simply a tool for rubbing dry transfers onto a surface. It is usually about the size of a pen and has one smooth end to rub with. You can see one in our video, showing how to apply dry transfers. Let us know if you require one when ordering.
